Seasonal Brake Tips: How Weather Affects Your Brakes (Summer & Winter)

How Summer Heat Affects Your Brakes

Brake Fade

When brakes overheat, brake fade occurs – the friction materials in your pads temporarily lose their ability to grip the rotor. This is common when descending long mountain grades or after repeated hard stops in heavy traffic. Use engine braking (downshift) on steep descents to supplement the brakes. If you feel fade developing, pull over safely and let brakes cool for 10-15 minutes before continuing.

Rotor Warping

Prolonged heat followed by rapid cooling (like driving through a puddle after heavy braking) can warp rotors. If your brake pedal pulsates after summer road trips or mountain driving, have rotors measured. Read our guide on when to replace rotors.

Brake Fluid Boiling

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point. Old, moisture-saturated brake fluid can boil during extreme heat, creating vapor in the brake lines. Vapor compresses (unlike fluid), causing a spongy or non-existent pedal. Most manufacturers recommend replacing brake fluid every 2-3 years. A brake flush costs $60-$150.

How Winter Cold Affects Your Brakes

Morning Rust and Grinding

After rain or overnight cold, a thin layer of surface rust forms on bare iron rotors. This is completely normal and wipes off within the first few brake applications. You may hear a brief grinding sound on the first stop of the day – this is rust being scraped off, not a brake problem. If grinding persists beyond the first few stops, that warrants inspection. See our full list of brake warning signs.

Parking Brake Freezing

In freezing temperatures, the parking brake cable or drum mechanism can freeze in the engaged position, leaving you unable to move the vehicle. In extremely cold climates, consider using wheel chocks instead of the parking brake when temperatures drop well below freezing.

Road Salt and Corrosion

Road salt used in snowy climates accelerates corrosion on brake components. If you live in cities like Chicago, Boston, or Minneapolis, an annual brake inspection is especially important to catch salt damage early.

Seasonal Brake Maintenance Checklist

Before Summer

  • Check brake fluid condition and age (replace if 2+ years old)
  • Inspect pad thickness – heat amplifies wear
  • Check caliper slides and hardware – lubricate if needed
  • Consider upgraded high-temp pads if towing or mountain driving

Before Winter

  • Full brake inspection including lines, hoses, and hardware
  • Caliper slides cleaned and relubricated with high-temp grease
  • Parking brake cable checked for corrosion
  • Verify brake warning lights work properly
