What Is ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System)?
ABS stands for Anti-lock Braking System. It prevents your wheels from locking up during hard or emergency braking. When a wheel locks (stops spinning while the vehicle is moving), the driver loses steering ability. ABS rapidly pulses the brakes – typically 8-30 times per second – to keep each wheel right at the edge of locking without actually locking. This maximizes braking friction while preserving steering control. ABS has been standard on all new US passenger vehicles since 2012.
How ABS Works: Step by Step
- Wheel speed sensors on each wheel continuously monitor rotation speed
- When you brake hard, the ABS controller compares wheel speeds across all four wheels
- If a wheel decelerates much faster than the others (indicating imminent lockup), the ABS control unit intervenes
- The system rapidly modulates hydraulic pressure to that wheel’s brakes
- This pulsing keeps the wheel spinning while maximizing stopping friction
You’ll feel ABS working as a vibration or pulsing in the brake pedal. This is normal – the system is working. Do not lift your foot off the brake when you feel this. Keep pressing firmly and steer around the obstacle.
What Does the ABS Warning Light Mean?
The ABS warning light comes on when the ABS module detects a fault. Common causes: faulty wheel speed sensor (most common), failed ABS control module, low brake fluid, or damaged reluctor ring. When the ABS light is on, your regular brakes still work normally – you just don’t have anti-lock protection during emergency stops. Have it inspected promptly.
