How the Parking Brake Works
The parking brake (also called the emergency brake or e-brake) is a mechanical braking system separate from your vehicle’s main hydraulic brakes. It connects to the rear brakes via a steel cable and operates by mechanical tension – pulling the hand lever or pressing the foot pedal engages the rear brakes directly without hydraulic pressure.
Common Parking Brake Problems
1. Parking Brake Won’t Hold
The vehicle rolls when parked with the parking brake engaged. Causes: stretched or worn cable that has lost tension, worn brake shoes/pads that can’t grip the drum or rotor surface, out-of-adjustment cable, or a seized self-adjusting mechanism inside drum brakes.
2. Parking Brake Stuck or Won’t Release
The brake stays engaged even after releasing the lever. Common after cold weather (cable or drum mechanism freezes in place), extended parking without use (light surface rust bonds the shoes to the drum), corroded cable, or a broken return spring. Never drive with the parking brake engaged – it generates tremendous heat and damages rear brakes and rotors quickly.
3. Snapped Parking Brake Cable
A broken cable means the parking brake won’t engage at all – the lever or pedal will offer no resistance. A snapped cable requires replacement; there’s no repair for a broken parking brake cable.
4. Parking Brake Warning Light Stays On
If the red BRAKE light stays on after releasing the parking brake, first confirm it’s fully released. If the light remains on, it may indicate low brake fluid – a more serious warning shared with the main hydraulic system.
